Security Focus: PC Security, Implementing the Human Firewall
As much as recent advertisements from both pc manufacturers as well as internet service providers promote their solutions to offer pc security and virus protection, it is still wise to give your end-user and personal computer's a security health check while reminding your end-users of some basic web browsing rules.
1 -Users should have an antivirus application on the desktop and keep it updated.
2 -Configure Windows for auto updates or at the very least keep Windows updated manually.
3 -In the office use a technology such as Websense to do web filtering. This will deter users from unknowingly downloading spyware or other malware and can prevent compromising workplace website viewing.
4 -Be leery or "cautious" of websites requiring you to download software to view their page.
5 -Use care when reading e-mail with attachments and keep in mind malicious email often contains a return address of someone you know.
Tech Focus: 802.11 Wireless LAN
Affant recommends that businesses secure their wireless networks as much as possible while understanding that any wireless network on its own is inherently insecure. We recommend our clients use WPA whenever possible. If the wireless clients aren't capable of supporting WPA, we recommend using WEP, mac filtering and avoid broadcasting the SSID.
